Josephine de Karman Trust

The Josephine de Karman Trust is a U.S. nonprofit organization established in 1954 by Dr. Theodore von Karman, a renowned aeronautics expert, in memory of his sister Josephine. The trust was set up to support students in achieving academic excellence, particularly those nearing the completion of their graduate studies.

History

Dr. Theodore von Karman, born as Theodore de Karman, was one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to aerodynamics and was the first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) and one of the founders and the first director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Josephine, his only sister, was a close companion and played an important role in managing his social engagements, which included hosting salons with prominent figures in Pasadena. After her sudden death in 1951, Dr. von Karman established the fellowship in her honor to support students whose academic achievements align with his high standards.

Purpose and Activities

The primary purpose of the Josephine de Karman Trust is to provide fellowships to PhD students who are in the final stages of their dissertation work. The fellowship is open to students in any academic discipline, with special consideration given to those in the humanities. The award amounts are typically substantial, supporting students in the United States, particularly those enrolled at California universities.

In recent years, the trust has transitioned its management to the Pasadena Community Foundation, which now oversees the fellowship awards. This move aims to optimize administrative costs while maximizing the scholarship funds available to students.

Scholarship Program

The Josephine de Karman Fellowship awards around $25,000 to successful applicants each year. The scholarship is non-renewable and is intended for use within a single academic year, primarily for tuition and fees associated with completing the PhD. Eligibility criteria include being a PhD student at a California university nearing the completion of their degree, with all but the dissertation requirement fulfilled. The selection process is competitive, with preference given to students demonstrating outstanding scholastic achievements and contributions to their field.

Impact and Legacy

The Josephine de Karman Trust has a long history of supporting graduate education, recognizing students who embody the academic excellence espoused by Dr. von Karman. The trust's transition to the Pasadena Community Foundation ensures its continued support for PhD students in California universities, maintaining the legacy of Dr. von Karman's commitment to academic excellence.
