Back Country Horsemen of America

The Back Country Horsemen of America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving access for recreational saddle and pack stock use on public lands across the United States. The organization is committed to responsible stewardship of these lands through education, service, and cooperation with government agencies.

History

The Back Country Horsemen of America was formed in the early 1970s in Montana's Flathead Valley by a group of concerned horsemen who recognized a growing trend towards restrictions on horse use in backcountry areas. Founders Ken Ausk, Dulane Fulton, Dennis Swift, and Roland Cheek initially focused on Montana but soon expanded to other states. By 1985, the organization began to take shape with the involvement of groups from Idaho, Washington, and California, ultimately adopting the name Back Country Horsemen of America in 1986.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of the Back Country Horsemen of America is multifaceted:

  • Perpetuate the commonsense use and enjoyment of horses in America's backcountry and wilderness.
  • Ensure public lands remain open to recreational stock use.
  • Assist government and private agencies in the management and maintenance of public lands trails and resources.
  • Educate and encourage active participation in the wise use of backcountry resources by horsemen and the general public.
Activities and Partnerships

BCHA is known for its extensive volunteer efforts, with members contributing significantly to trail clearing and maintenance. The organization collaborates with youth groups, conservation corps, and federal agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service to promote sustainable practices and outdoor experiences for young leaders. BCHA also supports the formation of new state organizations to further its mission across the country.

Structure

The organization is governed by a National Board of Directors, comprising representatives from various state member organizations. BCHA operates at both state and chapter levels, with a robust network of volunteers and members working towards its objectives.

Impact

Through its grassroots efforts and strategic partnerships, the Back Country Horsemen of America plays a vital role in promoting responsible horse use, trail maintenance, and environmental stewardship across public lands in the United States.
