Overview
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization headquartered in the United States. It operates a global network of clubs dedicated to helping individuals develop their public speaking, communication, and leadership skills.
History
The organization's origins date back to 1924 when Dr. Ralph C. Smedley founded the first Toastmasters club in Santa Ana, California. Initially, it focused on young men practicing public speaking and soon expanded across the United States and internationally. The first international chapter was established in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932. Women were admitted as members in 1973.

Toastmasters International is structured around local clubs, with an average size of about 20-30 members. Meetings typically occur weekly or biweekly and are divided into several segments:
- Prepared Speeches: Members deliver planned speeches based on projects from the organization's education manuals.
- Table Topics: An impromptu speaking section where members are given topics on the spot to speak about for one to two minutes.
- Evaluations: Feedback on speeches is provided by other members to help improve speaking skills.
- Leadership Roles: Members take on various roles during meetings, such as Timer, Grammarian, and General Evaluator, to develop leadership skills.
Education Programs
The organization offers several educational programs, including Pathways, which features eleven different learning paths focused on public speaking, leadership, and strategic communication. The Speechcraft program is a short course aimed at non-members to develop their speaking skills. Members can also participate in speech contests and take on leadership roles within the organization.
Membership
As of recent years, Toastmasters International has over 14,000 clubs in multiple countries, with a significant global membership. Members benefit from a supportive environment to enhance their communication and leadership abilities.
Mission
The mission of Toastmasters International is to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders through practice, feedback, and leadership opportunities. The organization aims to foster personal and professional growth by providing a platform for members to develop skills in a safe and supportive environment.
