Texas Public Radio
Texas Public Radio (TPR) is a public radio broadcaster based in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It was organized in 1988 and formally incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization the following year, resulting from the merger of the Classical Broadcasting Society of San Antonio and San Antonio Community Radio[2][3].
Mission
Texas Public Radio's mission is to engage, inspire and inform, empowering the community to make life better by providing a wide range of programming including news, classical music, and educational content[2][4].
Radio Stations
TPR operates multiple non-commercial radio stations across Texas:
- KPAC 88.3 FM: Specializes in broadcasting classical music and fine arts information.
- KSTX 89.1 FM: Airs NPR's flagship news magazines such as "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition."
- KTXI 90.1 FM: Broadcasts to the West Central Hill Country.
- KTPR 89.9 FM: Serves the Permian Basin.
- KVHL 91.7 FM: Covers the Highland Lakes region.
- KTPD 89.3 FM: Broadcasts to Del Rio.
- KCTI 1450 AM: Serves the Gonzales area[2][3].
Programs and Services
In addition to NPR programming, TPR produces original content, including:
- Texas Matters: A statewide news program.
- Fronteras: Focuses on border issues affecting American politics and social environments[3][5].
- Classical Connections: Explores classical music.
- World Music: Offers global music selections[4].
Funding
Texas Public Radio is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and listener support. Contributions make up the majority of its revenue, as shown in recent financial reports[1][3].
History
The organization has been expanding its service area since its inception. KPAC began as an independent classical music station in 1982, while KSTX was launched in 1988 to provide NPR programming to San Antonio[3]. Over the years, TPR has acquired and established additional stations to increase its reach across Texas[2][3].
Leadership and Governance
TPR is governed by a Board of Directors composed of residents from its service area. As of 2024, Ashley Alvarado took over as President and CEO following the passing of Joyce Slocum, who led the organization for nearly a decade[3].
