Parents of Murdered Children
Overview

Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) is a U.S. national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and assistance to all survivors of homicide victims. Established in 1978 by Robert and Charlotte Hullinger following the murder of their daughter, Lisa, POMC has grown into a network of support groups across the United States and abroad.

Mission and Vision
  • Mission: POMC makes a difference through ongoing emotional support, education, prevention, advocacy, and awareness.
  • Vision: To provide support to survivors of homicide victims while striving for a world free of murder.
History

Parents of Murdered Children was founded after Charlotte and Bob Hullinger experienced the devastating loss of their daughter. Initially guided by Father Ken Czillinger, a Roman Catholic priest, the group expanded to include family members and friends who were survivors of homicide victims. Through mutual support and understanding, members found solace in sharing their grief.

Activities and Programs
  • Support Meetings: POMC holds regular meetings where survivors share their experiences and feelings, offering a supportive environment without judgment. These meetings often include discussions on the grief process and the criminal justice system.
  • Educational and Advocacy Efforts: The organization provides information about the legal process and advocates for survivors' rights and understanding within society.
  • Parole Block Program: This initiative helps survivors deal with the emotional impact of parole hearings, providing them a sense of control during these challenging times.
  • Second Opinion Services (S.O.S.): POMC offers independent expert analysis to address unanswered questions regarding a loved one’s death, providing closure and clarity.
Structure and Funding

POMC operates as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It relies on private donations and occasional grants to cover operational expenses. The organization is managed by a team of dedicated volunteers and leaders who oversee various chapters nationwide.

Impact and Recognition

POMC is recognized as the only national self-help organization focused solely on supporting and advocating for those affected by homicide. Its mission resonates with communities across the U.S., fostering healing and resilience among survivors while advocating for a safer society.
