Description

International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) is a U.S.-based non-profit organization that has been safeguarding public health and safety through the development of codes and standards for plumbing and mechanical systems since its founding in 1926. IAPMO is renowned for its role in creating and promoting model codes that are used globally.

History

IAPMO was established on May 17, 1926, by a group of 39 Southern California plumbing inspectors, including its first president, Charles Collard. The association's initial goal was to create a model code to protect public health from inadequate plumbing practices. Over time, IAPMO has expanded its scope to include mechanical systems and other areas.

Code Development

IAPMO is responsible for developing and publishing several key codes, including:

  • Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)
  • Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC)
  • Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code (USPSHTC)
  • Uniform Solar, Hydronics and Geothermal Code (USHGC) (previously known as the Uniform Solar Energy and Hydronics Code or USEHC).

These codes are designed to ensure uniformity in the application of plumbing and mechanical standards across different jurisdictions, both in the United States and internationally.

Activities and Services

IAPMO offers a range of services beyond code development:

  • Product Certification: IAPMO serves as a premier product certification agency in North America, testing and certifying tens of thousands of products through IAPMO R&T and ASSE International.
  • Training and Personnel Certification: The organization provides extensive training programs and personnel certification to ensure that professionals are equipped with the latest industry standards and practices.
  • Research and Development: IAPMO engages in industry research to support its code development and testing processes.
  • Humanitarian Efforts: IAPMO's charitable foundation, the International Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Foundation (IWSH), works to provide safe water and sanitation services globally.

Governance and Membership

With more than 4,500 members from 17 countries and all 50 U.S. states, IAPMO fosters collaboration among a diverse group of stakeholders. The IAPMO Group comprises over 20 companies worldwide, reflecting its extensive reach and influence.

Mission

IAPMO's mission is to protect public health and safety by collaborating with government and industry to develop comprehensive codes and set practices for plumbing and mechanical systems. This mission underscores its commitment to ensuring safe and healthy environments through robust standards and practices.
