Maharashtra Mandal Bay Area

Maharashtra Mandal Bay Area (MMBA) is a non-profit organization established in 1980, dedicated to promoting cultural ties among people interested in Maharashtrian culture in Northern California, particularly in the Bay Area. The organization's mission is to foster a community that celebrates and preserves Maharashtrian traditions, language, and customs.

Activities and Events

MMBA organizes a variety of cultural events, including annual festivals like Makar Sankranti, Ganeshotsav, Wari, Mangalagaur, Kojagiri, and Diwali. These festivals provide an opportunity for the community to come together, renew cultural ties, and educate children about Maharashtrian heritage.

In addition to cultural events, MMBA supports community service programs by collaborating with organizations in India. The revenue from some events is donated to support these initiatives.

The organization also hosts art events, showcasing local talents in music, dance, and acting through performances and competitions. Furthermore, MMBA arranges programs featuring visiting artists from India.

Keeping alive the rich theatrical tradition of Maharashtra, MMBA presents an annual Marathi play performed by local artists. Occasionally, visiting theatrical groups from India participate as well.

Collaboration with Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal

MMBA collaborates with Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal (BMM), a non-profit umbrella organization representing 54 Maharashtrian organizations across North America. In 2024, MMBA will host the BMM Convention in San Jose, California. This biennial convention celebrates Marathi culture and identity, bringing together thousands of Marathi-speaking individuals and families to share their heritage through art, music, dance, and more.

Membership and Community Guidelines

MMBA's membership is designed as a contribution to a non-profit cultural organization. Members are encouraged to support the community by attending events and participating in activities that promote Maharashtrian culture. The organization emphasizes a code of conduct that includes respectful behavior, collaboration, positive communication, confidentiality, and active participation in community activities.

Structure and Legal Status

MMBA operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, allowing donations to be tax-deductible. This legal status facilitates its mission to serve the community through cultural preservation and social service projects.
