The Providence Shelter – Serving Children Since 1838 Main Menu The Providence Shelter Serving Children Since 1838 Founded in 1838 by a visionary Quaker woman The Providence Shelter Foundation has evolved from its original purpose of housing orphans of color and the children of domestic workers. Today as Rhode Islands oldest independent charity it is a philanthropic foundation that supports organizations serving historically marginalized children of color and their families in Rhode Island. Providing Support Changing Lives The Shelter funds organizations that provide services or programs that uplift children and their families.
