Two locations = double the iris! 💜💛💚 🚜 The Lankow Historic Iris Collection at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms is in its prime! The 400 irises are rare historical varieties that otherwise might be lost to time. The collection is part of a nationwide horticultural heritage movement to preserve heirloom irises. The oldest variety dates back to 1597. 🌿 The Ann Montague Iris and Daylily Garden at York Street features more than 200 cultivars of iris interspersed with other spring-blooming bulbs and perennials to create a tapestry of color. In total, we have over 900 unique living varieties/taxa of iris between the York Street and Chatfield Farms collections (some on display and others not). This is our most diverse collection of a single genus! Daylilies, roses, waterlilies and penstemons all number in the 200s. A VERY SPECIAL BLOOM ALERT 🌸💕Amache Rose Since Fall 2021, the Gardens’ Horticulturist Mike Bone has been caring for rose cuttings collected at Amache National Historic Site in partnership with University of Denver Amache Field School and the Amache Preservation Society. The roses were planted 80 years ago by a prisoner at The Granada Relocation Center, or Camp Amache, in Granada, Colorado, that incarcerated Japanese Americans from 1942-1945. The plants were added to the Gardens’ living collection as a botanical record of Colorado and U.S. history, albeit a very dark part of our past. In 2023, some of the cuttings were shared with descendants of Camp Amache prisoners. The plants are on the north side of the Steppe Garden at our York Street location. Other rose species throughout the Gardens are just starting to bloom. We temporarily resumed screening our short film, "Amache Rose," in the Sturm Family Auditorium through Monday, May 26. Included with Gardens' admission. Screening times: May 21 through May 26, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. #AANHPIHeritageMonth (fb)
