Heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. According to the EPA, urban heat islands are 7º warmer in the daytime and 5º warmer at night than the outlying areas. In the city of Charlotte this would include the majority of West Blvd area, Beatties Ford, Freedom and Wilkerson.
