Alianza Coachella Valley’s Executive Director Silvia Paz and Thriving Salton Sea Communities Campaign Manager Aydee Palomino joined state and community leaders—including Assistant Secretary for Salton Sea Policy Joe Shea, CNRA Secretary Wade Crowfoot, State Water Board Chair Joaquin Esquivel, and DWR’s Evon Willhoff—to mark the filling of the East Pond Expansion of the 750-acre Species Conservation Habitat (SCH) Project. With this addition, over 2,000 acres of critical habitat are now in place at California’s largest lake. The SCH Project—central to the state’s 10-year Salton Sea Management Program—aims to restore habitat, reduce dust, and improve public health and environmental outcomes. This expansion, made possible by federal support from the Bureau of Reclamation and critical investments from the California Climate Bond (approved by voters in Nov. 2024), represents a powerful collaboration among local communities, state leaders, and conservation groups.
