Better Ballot North Carolina

Overview

Better Ballot North Carolina (BBNC) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization aimed at promoting electoral reforms, particularly Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), also known as Instant Runoff Voting, in North Carolina. Founded in July 2020, BBNC seeks to enhance voter participation and ensure that election winners have true majority support.

Mission and Activities

BBNC's primary mission is to educate voters about the benefits of RCV. This voting method allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference, ensuring that winners receive more than 50% of the vote without the need for costly runoff elections. The organization hosts public engagement events and creates educational materials to raise awareness about RCV's potential to promote fairer and more inclusive elections.

In its first year, BBNC conducted over 30 public events and established an outreach team that logged more than 100 hours of engagement. The organization has also built a support base of over 1,000 supporters and has secured contributions from over 100 financial backers.

Funding and Operations

BBNC operates as a 100% volunteer-run organization, with all donations directed towards operational expenses. In 2020, BBNC reported revenues of $1,853 and expenses of $881, resulting in net assets of $972. By 2021, the organization had received over $6,500 in contributions and had expanded its financial support base.

Partnerships

BBNC partners with various organizations involved in electoral reform advocacy, including FairVote, Ballotpedia, and the Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center.

Legal Status

BBNC is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, making donations tax-deductible.

There are problems with elections in North Carolina. Winning a primary requires only 30 of the votes. If no candidate earns 30 we must return to the polls and pay for costly runoff elections. Winning a general election has NO required minimum.
