Marine Corps League
The Marine Corps League (MCL) is a nonprofit organization and the only congressionally chartered United States Marine Corps-related veterans organization in the country. Its congressional charter was approved by the 75th U.S. Congress and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937.
History
The Marine Corps League was founded on November 10, 1922, with Major General John A. Lejeune among its founding members. It was formally organized in New York City and established to maintain the unique comradeship inherent in the Marine Corps among its members. The organization's motto, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine," encapsulates its mission and spirit.
Mission and Objectives
The MCL is dedicated to promoting the interests and preserving the traditions of the United States Marine Corps. It seeks to strengthen the fraternity of Marines and their families by providing support and fostering the ideals of Americanism and patriotic volunteerism. The League serves Marines, FMF Corpsmen, and FMF Chaplains who have worn the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblem.
Organization and Structure
The Marine Corps League is headed by an elected National Commandant and includes 14 elected national staff officers who serve as trustees. These officers, along with the National Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer, oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization. The League is structured into divisions across the United States, facilitating administrative efficiency. It has over 1,100 community-based detachments both domestically and internationally.
Activities and Programs
- Community Programs: The MCL is actively involved in various community-based programs, including Toys-for-Tots, scholarships, volunteer service, and patriotic functions such as national parades on Memorial Day and the 4th of July.
- Legislative Representation: The League provides representation to the U.S. Congress on legislative matters affecting the Marine Corps, national security, and veteran benefits.
- Charitable Support: It collaborates with the Marine Corps League Foundation, which offers financial assistance to Marines and their families through programs like humanitarian relief, disaster relief, and educational scholarships.
Legal Status
The Marine Corps League operates as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization under the Internal Revenue Service Code. Contributions to the League and its auxiliary and subsidiary units are tax-deductible thanks to a special group exemption.
Membership
Membership is open to former Marines who have served at least 90 days and were discharged under honorable conditions. Associate membership is available to other supporters of the organization. As of 2019, the League had approximately 63,250 members.
Publications and Media
The MCL publishes Semper Fi Magazine, which serves as a primary communication tool for its members and supporters.
Overall, the Marine Corps League plays a significant role in fostering camaraderie among Marine veterans and serving the broader community through its charitable and patriotic activities.
