Students Tackling Autism-Related Syndromes (STARS)

Overview
Students Tackling Autism-Related Syndromes (STARS) is a nonprofit organization established in 2015 by Kim Jameson, a parent of an autistic son. Based at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, STARS is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting college students with autism. The organization aims to assist these students in achieving academic success, building social connections, and preparing for their future careers.

Mission
STARS' mission is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that empowers students with autism to successfully navigate college and develop essential life skills. The organization promotes personal growth through various targeted programs that enhance social, academic, and career readiness skills.

Programs and Activities
STARS offers a variety of programs designed to foster community, learning, and personal development among its participants, including:

  • Social Programs: Weekly game and social nights designed to encourage interaction and friendship formation among students. These activities promote self-expression and boost confidence.

  • Academic Coaching: Individual coaching sessions that assist students in managing their time, organizing their tasks, and developing self-advocacy skills, supported by the Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation services.

  • Philanthropy Initiatives: Opportunities for students to engage in community service projects, promoting a sense of giving back and social responsibility.

  • Pre-Employment Programs: Workshops aimed at enhancing career-readiness skills, preparing students for successful transitions from college to the workforce.

  • InsideOut Program: This program focuses on promoting physical health through structured exercise and social activities, addressing the lack of physical activity often observed in autistic individuals. It has successfully fostered friendships between autistic students and their peers, contributing to a supportive community atmosphere.

Core Values
STARS is guided by several core values, emphasizing the strengths of students with autism, community inclusivity, evidence-based practices, self-advocacy, and the importance of autism awareness. The organization aims to create an environment where every student feels valued and empowered.

Impact
STARS reports a 100% graduation and retention rate for its participants, demonstrating the effectiveness of its programs in supporting students through their college journeys. The organization also aims to expand its reach to more students and institutions, fostering a greater understanding of autism and promoting inclusive practices within educational settings.

Through its comprehensive approach, STARS not only focuses on the academic success of its students but also on their overall well-being, aiming to improve both their social lives and career prospects in a supportive and engaging environment.
