🐚Citizen Scientist Update: Hermit Crab Chronicles For the last 6yrs, I’ve been spending time every day observing our local native hermit crabs — watching, listening, and learning. As a self-declared citizen scientist, I’m starting to notice some fascinating patterns that seem to repeat year after year. Here’s what I’ve documented recently: 1️⃣ The other night, the woods were alive with the sound of hermit crabs — I could literally hear them crawling. 2️⃣ This is the season when baby hermit crabs begin their journey from the sea to the land. 3️⃣ Back in 2019, we noticed a massive gathering of hermits at our neighbor’s house. 4️⃣ Last night, that same neighbor texted me: “There are so many hermit crabs out here again!” So what does it all mean? I’m not sure — but here’s a theory: the baby hermits emerge, and the adult cast seems to go on the move. I know they tend to follow each other, possibly for shared resources. Could this be their way of helping the babies find the group and integrate into the cast? 🤔 There’s so much I’d love to explore full time — so many questions and clues right here in the undergrowth. Just wanted to share and preserve these observations for now. Nature is incredible when you slow down and look closely. 🌿 (fb)
