We are a community-based nonprofit organization established to assist grassroots groups, local governments, environmental groups, and community activists to expand people’s civil, political, and environmental rights within Virginia’s cities, towns, and counties. As part of that mission, we educate Virginians about community self-government and we work towards state and federal constitutional change that codifies that right of local self-government. Our purpose is to assist environmental, labor, public health, and social justice community groups to advance municipal laws focused on expanding environmental, labor, and justice rights.

Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights Inc.

Overview

Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights Inc. (EIN: 850757114) is a nonprofit organization based in Virginia, focused on promoting the rights of nature and advocating for local self-government. The organization was established to address environmental challenges and empower communities to assert their rights in the face of corporate interests that jeopardize democratic processes and environmental justice.

Mission

The mission of the Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights Inc. is to advocate for the recognition of the inherent rights of communities and nature to a healthy environment. The organization emphasizes the importance of local self-governance as a means to secure these rights and challenges the legal frameworks that prioritize corporate rights over those of individuals and ecosystems. Through education, grassroots organizing, and community engagement, the organization seeks to elevate the rights of people and nature above corporate claims.

History

The Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights was born out of a grassroots movement that gained momentum in response to environmental threats, particularly the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) project, which faced significant opposition from local communities. The founding members of the organization participated actively in efforts to halt the ACP, particularly focusing on its implications for vulnerable communities, including those in Buckingham County. This struggle highlighted the need for a formal structure to support and amplify local voices advocating for environmental rights and democratic governance.

In its establishment phase, the organization drew inspiration from the broader Community Rights movement, which seeks to empower communities to enact local laws that protect their rights and the environment. This led to the creation of community bills of rights aimed at safeguarding local ecosystems from exploitation, promoting sustainable practices, and defending communities against corporate encroachment.

Activities

Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights Inc. engages in various activities, including:

  • Education and Training: The organization conducts workshops and training sessions aimed at educating community members about their rights and the legal frameworks that can empower them to take action against environmental injustices.

  • Grassroots Organizing: It supports local community efforts to mobilize residents around environmental issues, encouraging participation in local governance and advocacy for community rights.

  • Policy Advocacy: The organization works to influence local and state policies that affect environmental protections, aiming to ensure that community interests are prioritized over corporate agendas.

  • Community Engagement: By fostering partnerships with other organizations and stakeholders, the network promotes collaboration among communities facing similar challenges, thereby strengthening the overall movement for democratic rights and environmental protection.

Conclusion

Virginia Network for Democracy and Environmental Rights Inc. represents a significant effort within Virginia to advocate for the rights of both people and nature. Its commitment to local self-government and environmental justice serves as a crucial framework for addressing contemporary challenges posed by corporate interests and environmental degradation. Through its initiatives, the organization aims to create a more equitable and sustainable future for communities in Virginia and beyond.
