Researchers at The University of Queensland - International have opened the first clinical trial to test a new immunotherapy drug, ASITI-201, to treat type 1 diabetes (T1D). Evidence suggests ASITI-201 could prolong pancreatic insulin production in people newly diagnosed with T1D. T1D requires the administration of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels throughout the day due to an autoimmune attack on cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Reducing the amount of insulin needed by preserving the function of these cells with a therapy like ASITI-201 would improve quality of life and mitigate the risks associated with delivering too much or too little insulin.
