Military Veterans in Journalism (MVJ) recently released a study where they asked news leaders how they view and hire veterans in their newsrooms and asked veterans working in the industry about their experiences. The results reveal how the military-civilian divide affects the journalism industry from both sides. Veterans in journalism reported challenges related to stereotyping, from editors assuming that veterans would only cover the defense and military beat. In one instance, an editor expected a veteran-journalist to have personal contacts with veterans experiencing suicidal thoughts to assist with a related story.
