Time For Life Corporation
The need for programs that are available to children with cancer and their families has grown due to the growing improvements in physical outcomes. These improvements are a result of increasingly aggressive medical treatments. These aggressive medical treatments have contributed to the increase in survival rates, leaving 200,000 children in the United States, in need of services to address the physical and psychosocial effects of the disease. Treatments that are more aggressive often result in long-term medical problems, shifting the nature of the disease from an acute crisis to a chronic medical condition. Physical impairments, learning disabilities, and post-traumatic stress, as well as many other long-term effects of surviving cancer, and the financial impact resulting from the cost of such aggressive treatments, must be acknowledged and addressed by the child and the family. The chronicity of the disease has a radical impact on the family?s ability to function and disrupts the usual dynamic of the family unit. When the family unit is in jeopardy the child suffers.
The ill child, parents and siblings struggle to incorporate this illness into their lives, often experiencing significant stressors in the process. Time For Life recognizes the difficulties children with cancer and their family members live with on a daily basis and is committed to providing services to increase the quality of life for children with cancer and their families.
Time for Life's programs are designed specifically to fill the void in services for children with cancer. Currently there is an insufficient scope of community based programs and services that address the unique needs of a child diagnosed with cancer and their family unit with this intensity of assistance.
