Overview
SAKALA International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States, established to support the community development efforts of SAKALA in Cité Soleil, Haiti. The organization is focused on empowering youth and fostering sustainable development in one of Haiti's most underdeveloped areas.
Mission and Objectives
The primary mission of SAKALA International is to amplify the work of SAKALA in Haiti, which includes providing a safe space for youth to grow, learn, and play. SAKALA International supports initiatives that promote education, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunity for the local community.
Programs Supported by SAKALA International
- FatraKa Art Program: This innovative program involves transforming trash into art and other valuable products. Youth participants create frames, cards, and other items using materials found in street dumps, promoting creativity and environmental responsibility.
- Environmental Initiatives: SAKALA International supports urban gardening and tree planting initiatives, as well as the creation of small enterprises where plastic bottles are used as a form of payment and then recycled.
- Manufacturing Organic Products: The organization supports the production of organic products derived from the moringa tree, which are used for nutrition and skincare.
- Composting Start-ups: Efforts are made to collect organic waste from streets and convert it into compost, helping to improve soil quality and mitigate flooding.

SAKALA’s leadership, including Daniel Tillias, has been recognized for their contributions, with Daniel being named a CNN Hero in 2019. This recognition highlights the community's commitment to creating positive change despite challenging circumstances.
