It’s been 30 years since the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, was forcibly disappeared by Chinese authorities, just days after being recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He was only six years old. To this day, his whereabouts remain unknown. His disappearance is not only a violation of human rights, but a deliberate attempt to suppress Tibetan religious and cultural identity. As the Dalai Lama nears his 90th birthday, the question of his succession and the preservation of Tibetan identity grows increasingly urgent. (fb)
