Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry Inc.
The Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry Inc. is a nonprofit organization that serves the communities of Pleasantville, Chappaqua, Hawthorne, Thornwood, Valhalla, and Mount Pleasant. It has been in operation since the mid-1980s and is affiliated with faith-based congregations in the community, continuing the tradition of neighbors helping neighbors in need.
Mission and Operations
The pantry operates as a choice pantry, allowing clients to select their items from available food shelves. This approach empowers individuals to make choices that best suit their dietary needs and preferences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the pantry temporarily shifted to pre-bagging items to ensure safety.
Food and Supplies
Every two weeks, the pantry distributes non-perishable and shelf-stable foods such as pasta, rice, beans, canned fruits and vegetables, soup, cereal, milk, and juice. Frozen meats are also provided at each distribution. Fresh, seasonal, locally-grown produce is made available one to two times a month, and dairy products are offered whenever possible. The pantry emphasizes providing healthy options, including whole grains, low sodium, and low sugar items.
For holidays, the pantry takes extra measures to provide complete meal options, including meats like turkey, chicken, and ham, along with sides such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams, cranberry sauce, and gravy. Baking goods, holiday treats, and specialty foods are also included in holiday distributions.
Community Engagement
The pantry encourages community involvement through food drives and volunteer opportunities. Organizations such as houses of worship, schools, corporations, athletic clubs, and civic organizations can participate by organizing food drives or donating non-perishable groceries, diapers, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Volunteers play a crucial role in setting up the pantry, assisting clients, and restocking shelves.
Inclusivity
The Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry welcomes all individuals, regardless of faith, ethnicity, race, or gender, with special consideration for disenfranchised individuals and those with disabilities. This inclusive approach reflects the organization's commitment to serving diverse community needs.
