Visual Aid encourages artists with life-threatening illnesses to continue their creative work. The organization was founded by a group of artists, collectors, and art dealers to help preserve, present, and promote the work of professional artists from diverse backgrounds with life-threatening illnesses. For 25 years, Visual Aid has been an integral part of San Francisco’s passionate social activism in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Today, the organization's focus is on selected curatorial projects and preserving artists' legacies through the Visual Aid Archives Project.

Visual Aid encourages artists with lifethreatening illnesses to continue their creative work. Andrea Antonaccio Family Portrait mixed media on panel 2010 Visual Aid Projects For 25 years Visual Aid has been an integral part of San Franciscos passionate social activism in response to the HIVAIDS pandemic supporting the creative production of artists with AIDS and other lifethreatening illnesses. Today volunteers are working on selected curatorial projects and the Visual Aid Archives organizing material compiled throughout the organizations history. Holdings include thousands of slides photographs sound and video recordings printed material and ephemera including images of artwork catalogs and documentation of significant exhibitions and fundraisers which include work by thousands of artists.
