Description

South Carolina Historical Society

The South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1855, dedicated to preserving the historical legacy of South Carolina. It is recognized as the oldest and largest private repository of historical materials related to the state, including books, letters, journals, maps, drawings, and photographs that document the state’s rich history.

History

The South Carolina Historical Society was founded by a distinguished group of citizens aiming to safeguard the historical records of the state. Since its inception, the Society has grown its collections significantly, which now encompass a diverse range of materials from South Carolina's 300-year history.

The SCHS is located in the Fireproof Building, a structure designed by the first professionally trained American architect, Robert Mills. Completed in 1822 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973, the Fireproof Building was specifically constructed to protect important public records and has undergone significant renovations, including a major update in 2016-2017 to modernize its facilities and enhance its archival capabilities.

Collections

The collections at SCHS are extensive, featuring over 60,000 items, including:

  • Personal documents and diaries
  • Plantation, business, and church records
  • Maps and architectural drawings
  • Genealogical charts
  • Photographs and prints
  • An extensive selection of books, pamphlets, and serials

Notably, the Society houses one of the largest collections of Confederate imprints in the nation. These materials serve not only as valuable historical records but also as research resources for scholars and the public.

Publications

The Society has been producing publications since the year following its founding, beginning with three volumes of its collections prior to the Civil War. It currently produces two main publications:

  • South Carolina Historical Magazine: Initiated in 1900, it is the only scholarly journal devoted entirely to South Carolina history.

  • Carologue: A quarterly magazine that debuted in 1985, featuring articles, illustrations, and news related to state history, genealogy, and preservation efforts.

Mission

The mission of the South Carolina Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share the stories of all South Carolinians, promoting an understanding of the state’s history and its significance within broader American history. The organization aims to make its collections accessible to the public, encouraging engagement with South Carolina’s past.

Funding and Support

The South Carolina Historical Society operates entirely through the support of its members and does not receive funding from local, state, or federal sources. Membership contributions help to sustain its operations and allow the Society to continue expanding its collections and outreach efforts.
