Each year 1.5 million Americans sustain a TBI (traumatic brain injury). In most cases, for those who survive, insurance covers the cost of treatment for the acute phase of recovery and rehabilitation. Once the patient moves on to live at home and receive outpatient therapy insurance coverage is limited. If the TBI survivor still has coverage at all they may only have 30 to 60 days of coverage for desperately needed physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapies. But recent studies conclude that TBI survivors can continue to improve given adequate therapy for one, two and sometimes up to ten years following their injury. A very large percentage of TBI victims are adolescents and young adults. Their injuries are the result of motor vehicle crashes, falls, violence, and sports injuries. To cease therapy when these survivors have most of their lives ahead of them is unthinkable both to the survivors and their families. There are other government programs designed to help but in most cases it is too little, too late. The mission of the T-Bird Foundation, Inc. is to help these survivors pay for badly needed therapy, therapeutic devices, and other therapeutic programs. In this way we aim to help TBI survivors reach their full potential.
