Multiple Sclerosis Alliance of Virginia

The Multiple Sclerosis Alliance of Virginia (MSAV) is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides comprehensive support services to individuals affected by multiple sclerosis in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding rural areas. The MSAV operates under the foundational principle of people with MS helping each other, ensuring that every donation directly benefits their community-enhancing services.

Mission and Objectives

The MSAV's mission is to provide programs, events, and activities that support individuals living with multiple sclerosis, including their caregivers, friends, and family. They focus on educational and empowering initiatives to enhance the quality of life for those affected by MS. Their objectives include:

  • Empowerment and Education: Offering educational programs and events to empower individuals with MS, their caregivers, and the broader community.
  • Community Awareness: Organizing awareness campaigns and educational activities for young people, first responders, and community organizations.
  • Support Networks: Establishing and expanding support groups, including those for assisted-living facilities and homebound individuals.
Key Initiatives
Respite and Renewal Programs

The MSAV organizes annual respite weekends, such as the Brian Mason Respite Weekend, which offers a supportive environment for individuals with MS and their families. This event provides entertainment, education, and community connection, offering a much-needed break from the challenges of living with MS.

Essential Resources for Independence

The organization operates a "loaner closet" equipped with vital medical equipment like wheelchairs and scooters. This initiative helps maintain the independence of members by providing necessary equipment during times of need.

Events and Partnerships

MSAV collaborates with various organizations and community partners to host fundraising and awareness-raising events. These partnerships enhance their mission by mobilizing community support and resources for those affected by MS.

Collaboration and Financial Support

Bike the US for MS has been a significant financial supporter of the MSAV, enabling the organization to continue its mission. Additionally, MSAV receives support from other organizations like the Institute for Public Health Innovation and the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, which helps in creating accessible and inclusive events for the community.
