Today at The Ohio State University at Marion, we had the honor of hearing from Douglas Scharre, MD, who shared valuable insights on Alzheimer’s, signs of dementia, early detection, and understanding the difference between normal aging and areas of concern. Participants even had the opportunity to take the SAGE test — a helpful tool in spotting changes over time. Are you noticing changes in how efficiently you think or process tasks? Mild cognitive impairment may show up in subtle ways — needing help managing finances, driving, cooking, medications, or showing poor judgment, such as falling for scams. Dr. Scharre also explained the various types of dementia that affect different areas of the brain. When it comes to Alzheimer’s, some red flags include: • Asking the same question repeatedly without remembering • Being unable to name common objects • Getting lost on familiar routes • Confusion about the month, year, or season • Struggling even when given helpful clues Education and early awareness can make a world of difference.
