Kiwanis International
Kiwanis International is a global, volunteer-led membership-based organization dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, it is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
History
Kiwanis International was established by Joseph C. Prance and Allen S. Browne as the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers but was later renamed Kiwanis, derived from a Native American phrase meaning "we trade." Initially formed as a networking group for businessmen, the organization gradually shifted its focus towards community service, adopting its current mission of serving children by 1980s.
In 1916, the first Canadian club was established, marking the beginning of Kiwanis's global expansion. By the 1960s, Kiwanis clubs had spread to over 80 countries. Today, the organization involves more than 600,000 members across over 80 countries.
Mission and Values
The mission of Kiwanis is to dedicate its efforts to improving the world by focusing on children and their communities. The vision is for Kiwanis to be a positive influence globally, ensuring all children have supportive communities to thrive.
The Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of the World." Its core objects include prioritizing human and spiritual values over material ones, promoting the Golden Rule, fostering higher social, business, and professional standards, developing intelligent and serviceable citizenship, and creating enduring friendships through service.
Service Activities

Notable projects include building accessible playgrounds, creating food pantries, and hosting diversity fairs. Kiwanis also partners with global organizations like UNICEF to undertake significant health initiatives, such as the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus and iodine deficiency disorders.
