The Mustang Project
Overview
The Mustang Project is a U.S. nonprofit organization based in Corning, California. It was granted tax-exempt status in May 2002 with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 68-0485853. This organization falls under the Human Services category, specifically focusing on multipurpose and other services to promote the independence of specific populations[1][3].
Mission
The mission of The Mustang Project is to provide a program that allows youth, especially those at risk, to learn about and interact with horses. The program aims to improve youth participants' awareness and skills related to horsemanship while transforming their lives through this interaction[3][5].
Programs and Activities
The program is open to students aged 13 and older, targeting those who lack the resources or support to engage with horses otherwise. While basic riding skills are taught, the focus extends beyond riding to encompass broader horsemanship principles. Participants are expected to maintain good grades and conduct in school and the community[2].
In addition to its youth programs, The Mustang Project advocates for the rescue of mustangs from slaughter. The organization participates in the adoption of mustangs gathered from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and state-controlled lands. These horses are trained using non-forceful gentling methods, which have proven effective for various activities and competitions[2].
Sanctuary and Education Center
The organization is working towards establishing a Mustang Sanctuary and Education Center. This facility will serve as a sanctuary for mustangs, providing a natural setting for education and public awareness about adopting and gentling these horses. Future plans include programs for veterans and youth camps using rescued mustangs[2].
Funding and Operations
The Mustang Project operates as an all-volunteer organization and is entirely funded by donations. It relies on volunteer efforts to spread awareness about the plight of America's mustangs and support its programs[4]. Donations are tax-deductible, supporting the organization's activities and long-term goals such as the sanctuary project[1][4].
Financial Structure
Historically, the organization has derived a significant portion of its revenue from program services, with contributions also forming a notable part of its income. Financial details and annual reports are submitted through IRS Form 990 filings[1].
Impact
Through its unique approach of benefiting both youth and horses, The Mustang Project serves a dual purpose. It not only enriches the lives of at-risk youth but also provides a vital service in rescuing mustangs from potential slaughter, promoting their adoption and welfare.
