Do you know anyone who earned a six-figure income in a specialized, highly-regulated industry with a company car and full benefit package that ended up living out of her car for six weeks after choosing to leave a personal relationship? Yes. You do. And at Safe In Harm's Way Foundation, Inc we know someone, too. It’s our founder and CEO, Caroline Markel. Thank goodness for her company car, because it become her new home until she could find a place to live, after she had ended her relationship in March of 2016- just four weeks before her wedding. Reasons to live in her car: 🚗 There was no room at any shelter in Kansas City. 🚗 The availability of housing took a minimum six weeks for an opening. 🚗 Daily threats from the man she left, promising to find her "so that we could die together." 🚗 Fear that if he found her with friends or family, he would kill them, too. What happens to people who don't have the great job cushion or company car? Abuse, especially financial abuse, causes long-term homelessness for survivors, their children, and pets. This is a great place to introduce financial literacy. Financial literacy, as it relates to financial abuse, is the topic of Caroline’s segment of Teope Media's mini-series which premiered on YouTube. You can find it most easily on YouTube via the links in comments. They discuss abuse affecting every demographic of people, and how to spot the red flags of financial abuse in a relationship. This is VITAL, because: 💝 Financial abuse starts out looking a lot like love. 💝 Financial abuse happens in 99% of all abusive relationships. 💝 Financial abuse is the #1 precursor to further violence in the relationships. Caroline and Faith Teope also discuss what you can do in current relationships to assess your own financial health. Watch today on YouTube, and find out more. Also, if you're not following Faith Teope on LinkedIn, you should. She is a master at all things related to 401K management, and a media maven poised to change the world. You will want to know her now, so that you can say, "I knew her when....." Join us. Take our hand, and let's go change the world. #savvy #savvyminiseries #financialliteracy #financialabuse #domesticviolenceawarenessmonth #hypewoman (fb)
