Megunticook Golf Club
Overview
Megunticook Golf Club is a private recreational golf club located in Rockport, Maine. Established in 1899, it is recognized for its historic significance and features a nine-hole golf course alongside a Craftsman-style clubhouse. The club was incorporated in 1901, and its grounds have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993 due to their cultural and architectural significance.
History and Architecture
The origins of Megunticook Golf Club can be traced to summer residents who initially laid out a six-hole course on borrowed land in 1898. The course became permanent with the donation of land by philanthropist Charles Henry. The clubhouse, designed by the Boston architect Charles Brigham, opened in 1902, coinciding with the formal establishment of the club. Characterized by its broad wraparound porch and stained shingle exterior, the clubhouse is the oldest golf building in Maine and includes facilities such as a reading room, main club hall, and ladies' parlor.
The course underwent significant redesigns in the early 20th century, notably by landscape architects Warren H. Manning in 1912 and Albert Davis Taylor in 1915, enhancing its layout and drainage systems.
Facilities and Activities
The club spans approximately 66 acres and is situated on the Beachamp Point peninsula, providing picturesque views of Penobscot Bay. It promotes a family-oriented atmosphere where members engage in a variety of activities beyond golf, including tennis and pickleball, fostering camaraderie among its members.
Recognition
In addition to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, Megunticook Golf Club is noteworthy as one of the oldest private golf courses in the state of Maine. The club continues to be a vital part of the local community, upholding traditions of mutual respect and stewardship among its members.
Legal Status
Megunticook Golf Club operates as a 501(c)(7) organization, classified as a social and recreational club, which means that donations to the club are not tax-deductible. As of the latest fiscal year, the club has reported significant revenues from its activities, ensuring its sustainability and ability to serve its members effectively.
