History
Founded in 1922 at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, by Dr. Henry Ward Church and members of his language department, Phi Sigma Iota initially focused on fostering a sentiment of amity between cultures with differing languages. It expanded to become a national society with the establishment of its Beta chapter at Pennsylvania State University in 1925. Over the years, Phi Sigma Iota has grown significantly, merging with Alpha Zeta Pi in 1935 and expanding internationally with its first chapter outside the U.S. at Universidad Regiomontana in Mexico in 1982.
Mission and Objectives
The primary objectives of Phi Sigma Iota include:

Eligibility and Membership
Membership in Phi Sigma Iota is open to undergraduate and graduate students who excel in academic fields related to foreign languages. Undergraduate candidates typically need to have completed at least one third-year level course in a foreign language, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and rank in the top 35% of their class. Graduate students must demonstrate a high degree of competence in a foreign language and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5.
Professional members are alumni of collegiate chapters or individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of foreign languages. Honorary membership is awarded to those outside the field who have made distinctive scholarly contributions to foreign languages.

Symbolism and Insignia
The name Phi Sigma Iota is derived from Greek words signifying friendship (Philotes), zeal for languages (Spoude), and research and individuality (Idioma). The society's insignia includes a key and pin designed in 1935 by Dr. Robert E. Dengler, and its colors are purple and white. The chaplet of ivy and a five-pointed star are also symbolic of the society.
