A very good shade tree with a very cool leaf shape. American elm (Ulmus americana) is a large, deciduous tree with a wide-spreading head of branches. Take a rest under its protective canopy along Overlook Trail, and look closely at its leaves. At first, they might look like they have a typical oblong-ovate shape, but on second glance, you'll notice they are unequal, or offset at the base. This quirk of asymmetry allows the leaf to twist, facilitating the shedding of water or the passage of wind, reducing stress on the leaf and branch. (fb)

Last Saturday, our Saturday Crew volunteers spent the morning at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Hoyt Arboretum, working alongside members of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial group—including veterans, their families, and ROTC cadets—for a day of care and connection. Together, we focused on weeding, mulching, and general cleanup to help prepare the site for Memorial Day weekend, when visitors will gather to reflect and honor those who served. A flag ceremony took place during the workday, and everyone shared a pizza lunch afterward—an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and recognize the value of this meaningful space.
