On this Traditional Tuesday, we recognize two graduates — Lottice RedCorn and Luna Jacobs — of Daposka Ahnkodapi Osage Nation School. They were each presented with one of our 2nd Tanka Fund Limited Edition Collectible Blankets in recognition of their commencement. In some Native cultures, graduation is a significant moment because it represents achievement and a transition into a new stage of life. It is a time to lift up the hard work, perseverance, and growth of the individual, as well as to acknowledge the support of family and community in reaching this milestone. Blankets (Lakota) or blanket shawls (Osage) are given during graduation as a traditional and symbolic gift. In Lakota culture, blankets represent protection, respect, and love. Wrapping someone in a blanket is a way of showing pride and support — it symbolizes the community’s embrace as the graduate steps into adulthood or begins a new journey. It is both a spiritual and cultural act that connects the graduate to their identity and heritage. Luna and Lottice, who is the daughter of former Tanka Fund board member Electa Hare, spent part of their education harvesting two Buffalo in the fall. The Osage Nation Reservation in Oklahoma has reacquired 47,000 acres to return Buffalo back to their people, and the blankets were given to recognize the students’ hands-on work learning cooking skills that will benefit their community.
