Thumbs up for Carson! 👍 Born with multiple complex heart defects, including hypoplastic right heart syndrome and tricuspid atresia, Carson had his first open heart surgery at just four days old. By seven months, he received a heart transplant, which kept him going for nearly 15 years. But over time, his health declined. It became clear that he needed a second heart—and a new kidney, too. Our cardiologists, nephrologists, transplant surgeons and ICU specialists came together to design a custom plan for his dual transplant. On February 26, under the care of Dr. Joshua Rosenblum, one of our congenital cardiothoracic surgeons, Carson underwent his second heart transplant. Less than 24 hours later, Dr. Bhargava Mullapudi, our surgical director of pediatric abdominal transplant, performed his kidney transplant. 10 weeks post-dual transplant, Carson has had zero signs of rejection and is ready for a fun summer ahead. One year ago, Jax was fighting for his life. Today, he’s all smiles, full of snuggles and is sharing the love. ❤️ Jax was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a life-threatening condition where a hole in his diaphragm caused his intestines to push his heart to the right side of his chest. He also battled pulmonary hypertension and underwent four heart catheterizations to address pulmonary vein stenosis. To celebrate his recovery and first birthday, his family donated over 150 cozy blankets to our NICU that cared for him during his toughest days. (fb)
