Americans for Cures Foundation
Overview

The Americans for Cures Foundation is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for stem cell research and therapy. It was established to support the implementation and awareness of Proposition 71, a California initiative that provided significant funding for stem cell research.

Purpose and Activities

The foundation aims to educate the public about the importance of stem cell research and its potential to develop therapies and cures for chronic illnesses and diseases. It is heavily involved in promoting the work facilitated by Proposition 71, which led to the creation of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). CIRM was established to manage and distribute funding for stem cell research projects within California.

Leadership
  • Robert Klein: Founder and Chairman of the Board. Klein was instrumental in the campaign for Proposition 71 and served as the Chairman of CIRM's Governing Board for its first seven years. He was later named Chairman Emeritus of CIRM.

  • Melissa King: Executive Director. King is a passionate advocate for patients with chronic illnesses and has been involved in the California stem cell research program since its inception. She played a key role in forming the Americans for Cures Foundation and was part of the successful Proposition 71 campaign.

  • Don Reed: Vice President of Public Policy. Reed is a longtime advocate for stem cell and medical research, notably involved in organizing support for California's Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act.

  • Anna Maybach: Program Manager, Health Policy Impact. Maybach oversees collaborations with patient advocacy groups and analyzes stem cell research developments.

Financial Overview

The foundation's revenue includes contributions, other income, and investment income, with contributions being the primary source of funding. The organization lacks program services revenue, reflecting its focus on advocacy rather than direct service provision. Executive compensation forms a significant portion of its expenses.

Impact and Achievements

Americans for Cures Foundation has been pivotal in supporting and promoting the success of CIRM and Proposition 71. These efforts have contributed to the advancement of stem cell research in California, including recent approvals like Proposition 14, which secured additional funding for stem cell and related research.

Tax Status

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, making donations to it tax-deductible. This status allows it to receive tax-exempt donations in support of its advocacy and educational efforts.

What role do you think patient stories, like that of three-year-old Ava, play in shaping public perception and policy decisions related to stem cell research?

California voters approved funding for stem cell research back in 2004, leading to over 80 clinical trials and more than 2,900 published medical discoveries. But this important research needs your help to continue. This new California voter initiative will provide vital funding to continue development of treatments and cures for diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, Kidney Disease, and Blindness, as well as Infectious Diseases like COVID-19.
