Accredited Gemologists Association Inc.
Overview
The Accredited Gemologists Association Inc. (AGA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1974. It is dedicated to promoting the highest ethical and professional standards in the field of gemology. The association focuses on gemological education, scientific research, identification and quality determination of gem materials and jewelry, and other related purposes.
History
The AGA was born out of informal gatherings for gemologists initiated by Sonja J. Schwartzman and Tomiko Butler in the early 1970s. Initially called the American Alumni of F.G.A., the organization was officially established in 1974 under the guidance of Antonio C. Bonanno and the auspices of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. The first AGA newsletter was issued in July 1976, and the first AGA conference took place in 1983. In 2014, the AGA was incorporated as a nonprofit public benefit organization (501(c)(3)).
Mission and Objectives
The AGA's mission includes:
- Continuing Education: Providing education to gemologists and the gem and jewelry industry through timely educational programs and international conferences.
- Public Awareness: Raising awareness about gems and jewelry, guiding consumers to find relevant gemological professionals.
- Ethical Practices: Advocating for ethical business practices in the gem and jewelry industry.
- Excellence Recognition: Supporting excellence in gemology through awards, scholarships, and grants.
Membership and Governance
Membership in the AGA is open to individuals, including Fellows of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA), Fellows of the Canadian Gemmological Association (FCGmA), Graduate Gemologists of the Gemological Institute of America (GG), and others with equivalent credentials. The association operates with various member levels, including Corporate Membership. Governance is led by the Board of Governors, who serve three-year terms to steer the organization.
Activities and Publications
The AGA organizes annual conferences where cutting-edge gemological information is shared. They also publish a monthly newsletter and an annual Certified Gemological Lab Directory. The association supports international collaborations and has members worldwide, fostering a global community of gemologists. Additionally, the AGA promotes professional standards by offering advanced education seminars and workshops for its members.
Public Impact
As a nonprofit organization, the AGA impacts both professionals and the public by providing authoritative information and promoting ethical standards in the gem and jewelry industry. It serves as a resource for consumers seeking gemological expertise and supports research and education in gemology, making it a significant player in the international gemological community.
