Spokane County Medical Society

Overview

The Spokane County Medical Society (SCMS) is a professional membership organization that consists of physicians and physician assistants. Established in 1885 by Cyrus K. Merriam, a military physician stationed at Fort Spokane, the organization's primary mission is to promote physician unity and carry out public service. As of the latest information, SCMS has approximately 1,100 members.

History

SCMS was founded by Dr. Cyrus K. Merriam, marking an important milestone in the development of medical services in Eastern Washington. One notable example includes administering the Salk vaccine to immunize children against polio during the post-war period.

Spokane County Medical Society Foundation

In 1996, SCMS established the Spokane County Medical Society Foundation (SCMSF), which is dedicated to promoting scientific research, education, and public health projects. The Foundation supports various community programs, including funding for health clinics, education initiatives, and community development projects. It awards grants of up to $10,000 to organizations that align with its mission.
