Garst Peterson is famous for not being famous—from God's mile-high view, that is. A former Silicon Valley powerhouse, Garst had the good fortune of being able to retire early. He ultimately traded in a lucrative high-tech career and the prestige that goes with that, for a "low-on-the-totem pole" of importance volunteer gig at the Dr. Ray John Academic Center. (Podcast is embedded in the article.) Garst, along with a team of other AC volunteers, work with Recovery students like Danny (pictured here) who need help re-integrating into the work world. Whether it's helping them to learn basic life skills, pick and learn a trade, prepare a resume, tackle tech, or participate in online classes, Garst is dedicated to giving them the best possible chance at a successful re-entry. For Garst, it's been a humbling and eye-opening experience. "I'll be frank with you—these are people that I would not have associated with in my prior life," Garst readily admits in his K-Love interview. "I would have walked past them without looking at them twice." "But I soon realized they're the people who Jesus called us to help...and they're some of the most welcoming, gracious people I've met in my life."
