Blacks In Government
Blacks In Government (BIG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing equal opportunity and professional development for African American civil servants across municipal, state, and federal government levels. Established in 1975 and incorporated in 1976 under the District of Columbia jurisdiction, BIG serves as an advocate, employee support group, community resource, and advocacy body. Its mission centers on promoting equity, excellence, and opportunity in all aspects of American life.
History and Purpose
Blacks In Government was founded by a group of African American employees at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Rockville, Maryland, in response to racially related employment challenges. Initially focused on federal issues, BIG soon expanded to address similar problems at the state and local levels. The organization aims to empower African Americans in public service to tackle workplace and community concerns collectively.
Activities and Programs
BIG supports its members through various programs and activities:
- Professional Development: BIG hosts an annual training conference, initiated in 1978, featuring national experts to enhance employees' skills and career advancement. Over 3,000 individuals participate in these events, fostering creative problem-solving and contributions to organizational missions.
- Mentoring and Youth Development: BIG offers two national youth programs annually. The Training in Communications Program helps young people (grades 9-12) acquire essential communication skills through mentorship. The Information Superhighway Student Competition encourages interest in computer sciences among high school students, with awards for outstanding participants.
- Community Outreach: BIG is involved in community service, including scholarship awards and school visits, to promote education and development within African American communities.
Structure and Impact
With more than 230 chapters across the United States, BIG functions as a volunteer-driven membership organization. It promotes a family-oriented community atmosphere among its members and supports development within the black community. BIG's activities have contributed significantly to the career growth and social empowerment of African Americans in government.
LEGAL STATUS
BIG is designated as a 501(c)3 organization, focusing on educational, charitable, and societal benefit purposes, classified under Public, Society Benefit, and Government and Public Administration categories.
This organization fosters national efforts to ensure equity, excellence, and opportunity for African Americans, making it a crucial component of the broader civil service community.
