A nonprofit group formed in 1987 whose goal is to save Ha'ikū Stairs and the surrounding 'āina. OUR MISSION IS TO PROTECT THE HISTORIC HAIKU STAIRS (AN 81-YEAR-OLD METAL STAIRCASE) AND ITS SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. SINCE 1987 WE HAVE MAINTAINED THE STRUCTURE AND PROTECTED NEARBY ENDEMIC PLANTS AND SPECIES USING ALL-VOLUNTEER LABOR AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF PRIVATE DONATIONS.

Help us Save theStairway to Heaven The Haik Stairs also known as Stairway to Heaven are an iconic landmark and historic monument that island residents have treasured for generations. They are currently at risk of demolition and our organization is doing everything we can to stop that from happening. Although the City gave a formal blessing to begin demolition in April 2024 we successfully fought and received an injunction pending our ongoing lawsuit.

It isn’t the news we hoped for, but it’s far from the end of the road. 👎 The Hawaii Historic Places Review Board is “unable to unanimously agree” on our appeal, and thus will not overturn SHPD’s concurrence to demolish the Stairs. We believe this wording suggests some board members agreed with our position, which is encouraging — but we couldn’t sway them all.

One year later — the Stairs still stand. On April 9, 2024, the City instructed its contractors to begin immediately dismantling the Ha‘ikū Stairs, and our frenzy of legal filings, appeals and court hearings began. Thanks to your support, we’ve kept the Stairs standing 🙌 🗓️ Latest update: • On April 29, 2025, the Hawaii Historic Places Review Board finally held a hearing to address our complaints about SHPD’s approval of the demolition project.
