East Wind's mission is to Empower. Cultivate. Inspire. We are committed to uplifting the youths in Chinatown by engaging in lion dancing, martial arts, academic achievement and community involvement.

East Wind Foundation for Youth

The East Wind Foundation for Youth is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit organization based in the Los Angeles Chinatown community. Established in 1972 by Sifu Ron Quan, the organization focuses on empowering and uplifting inner-city youths through various programs designed to promote cultural heritage, academic achievement, athletic enhancement, and community involvement.

Mission and Core Values

The foundation's mission is "Empower. Cultivate. Inspire." Its core values include self-discipline, responsibility, camaraderie and solidarity, innovation and creativity, self-efficacy, and social mobility. These principles guide its efforts to foster personal growth, community leadership, and social responsibility among its youth participants.

Programs

The organization offers a comprehensive range of activities:

  • Performing Arts: Participation in lion dancing and martial arts helps children appreciate their cultural heritage.
  • Education: Programs focus on academic achievement, including college counseling and financial literacy workshops.
  • Community Involvement: Participants are encouraged to engage in community service to develop leadership skills.
  • Athletic Enhancement: Activities extend beyond martial arts to include outdoor experiences like camping, fishing, and snowboarding.
Leadership and Structure

The foundation is led by a dedicated board of directors, with Wayland Tam serving as President. Brian Nosaka acts as Director of Finance, and Angie SooHoo handles Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Notably, all members of the organization, including its leadership and instructors, are unpaid volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to support the community.

Impact

Over decades, East Wind has positively impacted the lives of numerous at-risk youths, providing them with skills and opportunities that enhance their educational and professional prospects. The organization remains committed to fostering a strong sense of community and social responsibility among its participants.
