Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating Inc.
Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating Inc., also known as CRAB, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing adaptive boating experiences to individuals with disabilities, recovering warriors, and youth from underserved communities. Founded in 1991, CRAB operates on the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States.
History
CRAB was established by Don Backe, following a car accident in 1989 that left him paralyzed. With the help of friends and supporters, Backe returned to sailing using modified systems, sparking the idea to help others with disabilities. This mission expanded to create a program that offers free sailing experiences to over 1,000 individuals annually.
Mission and Activities
The organization aims to enhance the quality of life for its participants by offering access to outdoor recreational activities that many would otherwise not experience. Programs include Family Sail Sundays, Group Sails, Sailing Camps, Clinics, and Regattas. These activities cater to a wide range of disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, deafness, Down Syndrome, blindness, and more. CRAB also supports veterans in their recovery process through sailing events.
Fleet and Facilities
CRAB's fleet includes six adapted Beneteau First 22A sailboats designed for mobility-impaired sailors, a Martin 16 with a "sip & puff" steering system for individuals with quadriplegia, and a Gemini Power Catamaran for adaptive fishing excursions. The fleet is supported by volunteers and tailored to provide a safe and enjoyable sailing experience for all participants.
Recent Developments
In recent years, CRAB has transitioned to a new facility, the CRAB Annapolis Adaptive Boating Center, which serves as one of the premier adaptive boating centers worldwide. This center features state-of-the-art accessibility features, including a learning center and floating docks.
Community Impact
The organization relies on donations to maintain its free services. CRAB's annual fundraiser, the CRAB Cup, helps ensure that its programs remain accessible without charge. The event includes sailing races and a shore party, attracting hundreds of participants and supporters.
Volunteer Efforts
Volunteers are crucial to CRAB's operations, providing sailing instruction and support throughout the sailing season. Over 5,000 volunteer hours are contributed annually, reflecting the strong community engagement and dedication to CRAB's mission.
