Association for Hawaiian ‘Awa Our Mission Research education and preservation of the cultural and medicinal values associated with the awa plant About the Association for Hawaiian Awa The Association for Hawaiian Awa AHA is a 501 c3 charitable organization established for research education and preservation of the cultural and medicinal values associated with the awa plant. Formed in 1998 with a federal grant from the Rural Economic Transitional AssistanceHawaii program AHA received additional support at its inception from the Sacharuna Foundation. AHAs original board of directors was comprised of Jerry Konanui Jeri Ooka Ed Johnston Genesis Lee Loy Joel McCleary and Noelani Whittington. By sponsoring a number of publications workshops and conferences AHA has shown people around the islands how to grow the plant recognize the different Hawaiian varieties and prepare the drink.
