Boy Scouts of America

The Mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), now known as Scouting America, is a United States-based nonprofit youth organization. It was founded on February 8, 1910, with the purpose of instilling values like patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and moral character in young people.

History

The BSA was inspired by the Boy Scouts Association created by Robert Baden-Powell in 1908 in Britain. The American version was initiated after a notable encounter between Chicago publisher William D. Boyce and a British Scout in London. Boyce was impressed by the Scout's behavior and decided to bring the concept to the United States. He incorporated the organization with the help of figures such as Ernest Thompson Seton and Daniel Carter Beard.

Early challenges included racial segregation, with many southern communities maintaining segregated troops until the late 1940s. The organization gradually integrated, becoming fully racially integrated by the 1970s.

Programs

The BSA offers various programs tailored to different age groups:

  • Cub Scouts: For youth aged 5 to 11, focusing on character development and outdoor skills.
  • Scouts BSA: Originally known as Boy Scouts, this program now includes both boys and girls from 11 to 17 years old. It emphasizes character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership.
  • Venturing: Designed for youth 14 to 21 years old, focusing on outdoor activities and career exploration.
  • Sea Scouts: Also for youth 14 to 21, this program emphasizes maritime learning and service.
Mission and Methods

The organization's mission is to prepare young people to make ethical choices by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Key methods include:

  • Scouting Ideals: Emphasizing the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
  • Patrol Method: Organizing youth into small groups to foster teamwork and leadership.
  • Outdoor Programs: Encouraging activities like camping, hiking, and aquatics.
  • Advancement and Recognition: Offering merit badges and ranks to recognize achievements.
Legacy

By 1973, the BSA had reached its peak with over 4 million youth members. Today, the organization continues to evolve under the name Scouting America, with a new focus on inclusivity and diversity. It remains one of the largest youth organizations in the U.S., with over 1 million youth participants and 400,000 adult volunteers as of 2024.

Name Change

In 2025, as part of its evolution towards greater inclusivity, the BSA officially changed its name to Scouting America on its 115th anniversary, reflecting a broader mission and identity.
