Laser Institute of America
The Laser Institute of America (LIA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting laser applications and safety worldwide. Founded on February 7, 1968, as the Laser Industry Association, it was renamed the Laser Institute of America in 1972. LIA serves as a crucial professional society for the laser community, encompassing researchers, manufacturers, integrators, and end-users across industrial, educational, medical, research, and government sectors.
Mission and Activities
LIA's mission focuses on the dissemination of laser-related information through publications and symposia, promotion of laser applications and safety, development of educational programs, and acting as a liaison between various organizations to advance laser technology. The organization also assists federal and state agencies in enacting legislation related to laser safety.
Publications and Events
LIA publishes the Journal of Laser Applications, a scientific platform that covers diverse topics including quantum materials engineering, laser additive manufacturing, and biomedical applications. It also produces LIA Today, a bi-monthly newsletter discussing industry news and updates.
LIA organizes several prominent international conferences, such as the International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) and the International Laser Safety Conference (ILSC). These events provide essential forums for discussing the latest developments in laser technology and safety.
Standards and Certification
LIA serves as the secretariat for the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) Accredited Standards Committee Z136, which develops the Z136 series of laser safety standards. These standards form the foundation of laser safety programs worldwide. The organization is also responsible for certifying Laser Safety Officers (LSOs) through its subsidiary, the Board of Laser Safety.
Impact and Growth
Over the years, LIA has grown to become a recognized and trusted global organization, fostering innovation and advancement in laser technology while emphasizing safety. Its educational efforts are renowned, with LIA training more Laser Safety Officers than any other organization globally.
Founders and History
Notable figures in the founding of LIA include Dr. Theodore Maiman and Dr. Arthur L. Schawlow. These pioneers played crucial roles in shaping the organization's mission to promote the safe and effective use of laser technology.
