Hale Education, Inc.
Hale Education, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization based in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Founded by Robert Sever Hale on March 11, 1918, it is renowned for its commitment to connecting people, place, and purpose through nature, education, and recreation.
Mission
The mission of Hale Education is to inspire learning, empower leadership, and challenge individuals to create a world where people, place, and purpose are integrated. It achieves this by providing a diverse range of programs and activities for all ages.
Programs and Activities
Hale offers various programs that cater to different interests and age groups:
- Youth Programs: Hale is best known for its summer camps, including the Hale Day Camp and Hale Adventure Camp, which provide a wide range of outdoor experiences from traditional camp activities to hiking and mountain biking. The organization also offers a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program to prepare teens for leadership roles.
- School Partnerships: Programs like the Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) bring students from local schools to engage in hands-on education and combat summer learning loss. Partnerships with organizations such as the Greater Boston YMCA and Mass General Hospital's Aspire program further enrich the educational experience.
- Professional Development: Through initiatives such as the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership, Hale provides opportunities for lifelong learning and professional growth, offering courses and workshops for educators and leaders.
- Community Events: The organization hosts numerous family-friendly events, including equinox and solstice hikes, beach days, concerts, and various educational clinics.
Facilities and Land
Hale operates on 1,200 acres of land featuring 20 miles of trails and multiple ponds. The property includes historical sites such as a Native American felsite quarry and remnants of colonial-era farmhouses. While the Westwood Land Trust holds a conservation restriction on a portion of the land, efforts are ongoing to protect the remainder through community initiatives.
Conservation Efforts
In recent years, Hale has explored initiatives to protect its land through conservation restrictions, working closely with local towns and supporters. This involves acquiring funding to ensure the long-term conservation of the property, preserving it as a community resource and wildlife habitat.
Financial Status
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Hale's operations are supported by donations and fundraising efforts. A significant portion of its budget is allocated to programs, making it possible for thousands of individuals from over 70 Greater Boston communities to participate each year. The organization raises funds through events like the Boston Marathon and relies on philanthropy to maintain its programs and land stewardship.
History
Originally connected with the Boy Scouts of America, the organization has evolved to become a leading provider of outdoor education and community activities. It was renamed several times, with its most recent name change occurring in 2021, officially becoming Hale Education, Inc. from its previous name, Hale Reservation, Inc.
Impact
For over a century, Hale Education has been a cornerstone for outdoor learning and community engagement in Massachusetts, fostering personal growth, environmental awareness, and social connection among its participants. Its programs not only educate but also empower individuals to become responsible stewards of the environment and their communities.

Are you looking for a meaningful way to honor Earth Day? From April 19 to 27, Westwood Community Trails invites you to choose from various locations in the area to pick up a bag (including Hale) and clean up our community. If you’d prefer to participate with a group, WCT is hiking and cleaning Currier Reservation on April 19. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D45A9AC2AA5FB6-55763436-earth#/ (fb)

We love hearing from parents that their campers come home happy and dirty after a day at camp and we partly have the natural space at Hale to thank for that. Playing in the dirt and mud provides sensory input, builds resilience, may help reduce the risk of developing allergies, and builds immunity. Plus, it quite literally makes us happier. The bacterium "mycobacterium vaccae" found in soil triggers the release of serotonin, which improves mood and brain function. #letkidsplayoutside #letkidsplayindirt #thedirtierthefeetthehappiertheheart (fb)
