College science faculty are warning: today’s students are arriving unprepared, even at elite schools like Cornell. The root cause, they say, is politicized, content-deficient K–12 science standards such as the NGSS. Enter the Franklin Standards, launched in 2024 by the National Association of Scholars to restore rigor. So far, they’re making waves: - Built on the best pre-2000s science standards - Already influencing Oklahoma and other states (impacting 4M+ students) - Prioritize content mastery over pedagogy and politics - Seek to reverse decades of “dumbing down” and equity mandates Students today aren’t taught enough to evaluate scientific claims; they simply accept authority. During COVID, this meant many “believed the science” without understanding it. Professors say the NGSS buried the essence of science beneath trendy theory. The Franklin Standards aim to fix that by offering age-appropriate, apolitical content rooted in core knowledge.
