For 112 days — from Dec 7, 2024 to Mar 29, 2025 — Lake Okeechobee discharges poured billions of gallons of silty, nutrient-laden water through the C-44 canal into the St. Lucie Estuary. This massive influx of freshwater sharply dropped salinity levels, as recorded by the Kilroys at C-44 and Palm City Bridge — putting serious stress on saltwater-dependent species like oysters and seagrass.
