Mission and Vision

BGR's mission involves monitoring and analyzing government entities to identify critical issues that require best-practice problem-solving. Its vision is to remain a trusted information resource for better government, serving citizens, policymakers, community groups, and the media. BGR aims to continuously improve research, promote sound stewardship of public resources, and enhance government performance and accountability.

It is nonpartisan and does not endorse candidates for public office. Financial support comes from a mix of individuals, businesses, and foundations, ensuring independence from government influence.

Activities

BGR's work consists of two primary components:

  • Monitoring Local Government: BGR stays informed about current issues and identifies new ones to craft relevant annual work plans.
  • Public Policy Research and Reporting: BGR conducts objective, nonpartisan research to uncover facts, frame issues, and recommend solutions on significant policy issues in the New Orleans area. Over the years, BGR has published more than 1,500 reports aimed at improving government functions.

Impact

BGR's research has contributed significantly to government reforms in the region. It has been recognized with numerous national awards for its distinguished research and service.

Financial Profile

As a 501(c)(3) organization, donations to BGR are tax-deductible. Contributions are the primary source of revenue, supplemented by investment income and asset sales. BGR maintains a substantial asset base and minimal liabilities.

Governance

BGR is governed by a board of directors composed of community leaders from diverse sectors. The board ensures independence and ethical practices, requiring recusal in cases of conflict of interest. Regular assessments of the chief executive and board performance are conducted to maintain governance standards.
